What to consider before requesting an estimate?

Step 1: Have a budget. Research about the things you need done to your household and find out the cost of all the parts involved, to get an accurate idea of what the overall project will cost you.

Step 2: Learn more about your home. Try to locate all the main water valves, even draw a map with all the pimping that’s going through your home (this is especially important if you’re just building your home, and have piping going behind walls that will get closed off after your home is built). The sooner your contractor knows the layout of your home’s plumbing, the faster he can fix whatever problem you might have.

Step 3: Research multiple contractors. Select a few contractors with good reputation, tell them your situation and what you need from them and wait for them to give you a quote. Compare the quotes from the contractors between themselves but also with your own research, and see which one is best suited to handle your situation.

Before you make your final decision, be sure to also consider the following:

Should I hire a licensed contractor?

While not usually required, it is recommended. Contractors looking to get certified and licensed usually have to pass rigorous tests. A license also ensures that your contractor has the proper experience to deal with any problems in your household on a professional level, in a safe environment.

How to choose the right contractor?

The usual factors are experience, reputation, expertise and price, but we advise you take personality into account as well. If both you and the contractor have great chemistry and you can work together as a team, everyone benefits and the work gets done quicker.
